Foundation Charter Oak Broadleaf Review

When Nicholas Melillo launched Foundation Cigar Company, the industry expected big things. Having cut his teeth blending some of the most legendary Broadleaf cigars at Drew Estate, Melillo’s expertise with Connecticut-grown wrappers was unquestionable.

But while the Tabernacle grabs the headlines as Foundation’s heavy-hitting Broadleaf masterpiece, it’s the Charter Oak Broadleaf that quietly serves as the brand’s everyday MVP.

Priced in the sweet spot of around $7.00, the Charter Oak is meant to be a tribute to Melillo’s home state of Connecticut and the legendary Charter Oak tree. It’s an everyday smoke that aims to deliver premium flavor without the premium price tag. Does it succeed? Absolutely.

The Broadleaf Experience

The first thing you notice about the Charter Oak Broadleaf is the wrapper. It’s rustic, toothy, and dark—classic Connecticut Broadleaf characteristics. It’s not meant to be a pristine, seamless presentation; it’s a rugged, oily leaf that screams flavor.

Lighting up, you’re immediately hit with that signature Broadleaf profile: rich earth, dark cocoa, and a natural sweetness that coats the palate. There’s a touch of black pepper on the retrohale, but it’s surprisingly smooth for a cigar at this price point.

As you progress through the first third, notes of leather and espresso join the fray. The sweetness leans toward a molasses or dried fig note, balancing the earthy core perfectly.

Middle and Final Thirds

Moving into the second third, the Charter Oak doesn’t undergo any wild transitions, and that’s perfectly fine. It settles into a comfortable, medium-bodied groove. The chocolate notes become a bit creamier, and a subtle woodiness—like charred oak—enters the profile.

In the final third, the strength ticks up slightly, pushing toward medium-full, but it never becomes aggressive or harsh. The earthiness deepens, and the spice returns to the tip of the tongue for a long, satisfying finish.

Construction and Value

Where the Charter Oak truly shines is its value. Finding a well-constructed, flavorful Connecticut Broadleaf cigar under $8.00 is increasingly difficult in today’s market. The draw is consistently excellent, and while the burn line might occasionally require a touch-up (a common trait of thick Broadleaf wrappers), it performs admirably.

The Verdict

The Foundation Charter Oak Broadleaf isn’t trying to be a complex, ultra-premium occasion smoke. It is, simply put, a masterclass in value blending. If you love the dark, sweet, and earthy profile of Connecticut Broadleaf, this should be a staple in your humidor. It punches well above its weight class and serves as the perfect everyday companion for a cup of black coffee or an aged rum.
