The LFD Andalusian Bull: Some Cigars Are Famous for a Reason

Some cigars are famous because of marketing. The LFD Andalusian Bull is famous because it’s genuinely, legitimately one of the greatest cigars ever made — and the difference matters.

When Cigar Aficionado named it the #1 Cigar of the Year in 2016, awarding it 96 points in blind tasting, it wasn’t a surprise to anyone who had already tracked one down. It was confirmation. The Andalusian Bull had been building its reputation among serious enthusiasts long before that crown made it the most coveted Dominican release on the market.

Now the challenge isn’t convincing anyone it’s worth smoking. The challenge is finding one.

Litto Gomez Didn’t Plan to Make Cigars

The story behind La Flor Dominicana is the kind Hollywood would edit for being too dramatic. Litto Gomez was a jeweler in Miami — born in Spain, raised in Uruguay, eventually running his own business in the United States. Then a robbery at gunpoint changed everything.

That moment sent Gomez and his partner Ines Lorenzo-Gomez to the Dominican Republic, where they incorporated their cigar company in 1994 under the name Los Libertadores. The first LFD cigars rolled out in 1996. The name became La Flor Dominicana — a nod to the flower of the tobacco plant — and a brand was born in Tamboril, Santiago.

What set Gomez apart was his outsider’s perspective. No family background in tobacco, no inherited playbook. He approached blending as a craftsman and went fully vertical — acquiring farms in La Canela, growing his own tobacco from seed, controlling every stage of production. That obsessive control over raw material is what makes LFD blends taste like nothing else. The Dominican Ligero he cultivates on his own land is the backbone of the Andalusian Bull, and it’s the reason the cigar hits like it does.

Why the Salomon Changes Everything

The Andalusian Bull is a Salomon — a torpedo-like figurado measuring approximately 6.5 inches with a ring gauge that transitions from around 52 at the tapered head up through a massive 64 at its widest. That geometry isn’t decorative. It’s functional.

Because draw resistance shifts as you move through the ring gauge, you’re essentially smoking three different experiences in one stick. The narrow head delivers concentrated, focused flavor. The belly opens up complexity in the middle. The taper toward the foot brings depth together into the finish.

Rolling a Salomon well is among the hardest tests in any factory. The fact that reviewers universally praise this cigar’s draw and construction tells you everything you need to know about the quality of LFD’s operation in Tamboril.

What You’re Actually Smoking

The Andalusian Bull is wrapped in Dominican Corojo 2006, with Dominican binder and filler — a full-bodied, full-strength cigar built for the experienced palate. This is not a casual Tuesday smoke. Plan your evening around it. Block out 90 minutes.

Early: The first third opens with leather, cedar, red pepper, and dark espresso. A pleasant sweetness — honey, sometimes bread — keeps the strength in check. The pepper can be assertive, but rarely aggressive.

Mid-smoke: This is where the Andalusian Bull earns its reputation. A creamy, almost milky texture emerges as the ring gauge widens. Dark caramel, black cherry, and cocoa appear alongside the continuing leather and cedar. The layering of flavors that keeps shifting — this is what the 96-point reviews are about.

Finish: The Dominican Ligero announces itself in the final third. The warmth deepens, spice returns, and the cigar closes with roasted coffee, dark pepper, and a lingering earthiness that stays on the palate long after you set it down. Strength builds measurably, but it never tips into harshness.

Across all three stages: leather, cedar, dark spice, black pepper, cocoa, dried fruit, floral notes, and hints of saffron and cumin for the adventurous palate. It’s a full canvas.

The Legend Problem

Here’s the honest challenge: scarcity is baked into this cigar. LFD keeps production limited — this isn’t a line you’ll find at every brick-and-mortar. Authorized LFD dealers are your best bet. Premium online retailers that carry LFD allocations stock it periodically. When you see it, buy it.

The limited production isn’t manufactured to create hype. It reflects the reality of a vertically integrated operation growing its own tobaccos. You can’t scale a farm overnight. The Andalusian Bull takes what it takes because Litto Gomez insists the tobacco be right.

That’s a feature, not a bug. Every Andalusian Bull in circulation represents genuine care at every stage.

Who This Cigar Is For

If you’re a full-bodied smoker working your way through the Dominican catalog, the Andalusian Bull is the destination. It answers the question of what Dominican tobacco is capable of at its absolute ceiling.

If you’re a collector who benchmarks your palate against classics, this is required reading. Not optional.

If you’re newer to full-bodied cigars, put this on your list for six months from now. Give yourself something to aim for.

The Andalusian Bull doesn’t need the hype. It created the hype. That’s the difference.
